Second time staying

This was our second time staying at Sunstar Heritage. It's good value for money. The rooms are clean and tidy. The rooftop has the option of open air outside or inside sitting (A/C). The staff up in the rooftop area are excellent and very friendly.

Disappointing

The hotel is supposed to be 3 Star, but the location drags it down much lower. It's very difficult to access on a narrow street, in a very crowded area. Staff were attentive and responsive. The decor is tired and a little grubby - don't be fooled by the promotional photos.

Only one ,final night of group tour. .Bathroom fine, towels, WiFi in room BUT only a bottom sheet on the bed.No top sheet. Staff did not understand request for top sheet and simply pointed to a quilt in the cupboard. Quilt not needed in August and did not remove the cover to use that as it was decidedly grubby. Breakfast buffet offering scant (rather leaning toward continental style) but real ground coffee!!!Yeah!! Walking outside one is hassled by taxi drivers/rickshaw wallahs and tuktuk drivers, once past the roundabout they leave you alone.

When booking our hotels, we always check the reviews and the pictures to ensure we are choosing a clean and good place to stay in. Unfortunately, the pictures have been photo-shopped and make it look amazing, but when you get there it is totally the opposite. We stayed one night and we could not even shower there, everything was so untidy and old. I had 2 kids with me and I didn't feel it was clean at all for them. the food area is so dirty and they have old crockery items. I even saw baby cockroaches next to the toaster, which was very off-putting. We planned to stay another 2 nights along our planned trip, but asked our travel agent to please change the hotel as as would not think of staying at a place like that. I did't even take pics as I was so disappointed with the hotel.

THIS was the first hotel I stayed in on my first ever visit to India, so my memories of it are crystal clear. In all I stayed here on three occasions for a total of five nights during my tour and staff were always very friendly and very helpful, the major plus of this hotel. Particular mention should go Shivam Travedi who was a constant source of help to me with everything from special food and beer to advice about the area round the hotel. He really helped make my stay at the SunStar Heritage the best it could be. Covid has not been kind to India. Many hotels and bars have gone out of business and I can only presume that what problems I found with the hotel were down to an unwillingness to invest any more money in the accommodation than was absolutely necessary in difficult times. The entrance and reception areas of the SunStar Heritage were in good condition, a security guard was frequently on duty at the front and there was a security arch in the reception area. Furniture in the foyer was in good condition and the hotel’s lift was the swiftest of all the lifts used during my holiday. Very useful as the restaurant at the hotel was on the fourth floor occupying a rooftop terrace area. Unfortunately the maintenance both of the terrace area and the eating area was poor. Large sections of wallpaper hung peeling from the wall near the area where the food was and where a breakfast toaster operated and there were chips, scrapes, gouges and marks over a wide area giving everything a battered appearance. One side door in the breakfast area was left open one day giving a view into a cramped roof area covered in leaking pipework which dripped down into a large pool of water. The outside terrace gave cause for concern since some areas of brick and plasterwork were not just cracked but badly damaged with internal rusting metal rods openly exposed to view. Not sure if it could be classed as a hazard, but it certainly didn’t look strong enough to risk leaning on to enjoy the view! As far as my room was concerned there were problems with the air conditioning which were solved, but the toilet seat was broken and remained broken despite being reported. Also some light switches did not work and the razor point in the bathroom was broken. I had to use another power point in the main bedroom which had no nearby mirror so I couldn’t see properly to shave. There was no clear guidance at all about how to get the room cleaned. I eventually asked about cleaning and was told I had to leave my key with reception. Water bottles were provided but only for the first 24 hours. No more were provided and I had to ask for water. The absence of water may possibly have been linked to room cleaning. By far and away the most serious failure was a broken room safe. Guests such as myself bring with them money, passports, airline tickets and medical certificates and we need somewhere to keep them secure. To find the room safe broken was poor but it got a lot worse. When I went down to reception and reported that my safe was broken the reply I got was that they’d look into it, but that I didn’t have anything to worry about because I had the only key to my room! This was a poor response since any decent burglar knows how to open a room door and could have stolen anything they wanted. Fortunately I have a tough suitcase with a coded locking mechanism on it which enabled me to lock my money and documents away. It was just as well I did because when I came back seven nights later I was again given the same room where I found that the room safe had not been repaired and was still broken! Worse, when I returned to the SunStar Heritage six nights later to spend my final night in India I was given an upgrade to a different room. It was very nice....but the room safe there was also broken. This made me suspect that damaged things are rarely repaired or dealt with. I found the bed a little hard but I still slept pretty well on all three visits. There was some traffic noise, horn honking etc and street dogs were occasionally noisy. The fridge in my room also had a particularly loud running noise. The worst source of noise was my fellow guests who seemed to feel that 11.30pm-1.30am was the ideal time to hold a loud conversation in the corridor. Because of that, most of my sleep came in the 1.30am to 6am period. Sleep was also not helped by my bedroom door being next to both the main staircase and the lift doors. The food was very good and my favourite buttered chicken was exceptional. Breakfast was simple but the best of any of the hotels or resort I stayed at. There was Indian or western food if you wanted it and I developed a taste for chi which I really liked. Shiv was exceptional in ensuring I got what food I wanted and he is a real asset to the hotel. Overall I would have no problem staying again at this hotel, but it badly needs maintenance of many things from general fittings in the room to the whole of the wider restaurant and terrace area.
